In 1935, at the age of 17, Oral Roberts was carried to a healing service on a chair to be healed of tuberculosis. It was on his way to this healing service, in the backseat of a car, that the young Oral Roberts began to believe that God would heal him.

According to Oral, “God said to me, ‘Son, I am going to heal you and you are to take the message of my healing power to your generation’. This call became the focus of his life. Oral’s autobiography, published in 1972, is actually titled “the Call”.

When the family arrived at the tent revival in Ada, Oklahoma, Oral was put on a rocking chair, propped up with pillows. After the preaching service, the preacher, George W. Moncey, put his hands on Oral’s head; said a short prayer, asking God to heal the young man in front of him. He, then, prayed in Jesus’ name, commanding the disease to leave Oral’s lungs.

Years later, Oral recalled that “The next thing I knew I was racing back and forth on the platform shouting at the top of my voice, ‘I am healed! I am healed! I am healed! I am healed!” Oral who once dreamed of becoming a lawyer or the governor of the state of Oklahoma, had just been healed! The preacher asked Oral to tell the people at the tent meeting about his healing and as he spoke, as he drew his breath, he felt the air going down deeply into his lungs. He had not breathed so deeply in months. No more burning, no racking cough, no bleeding.

Soon after this revival, Oral’s doctors fluoroscoped his lungs and found no trace of tuberculosis.
